Item 1. Setting up supported living for our son

  • You Said
Could there be a blueprint here for other families? How can we learn?
  • Response
Always happy to talk to people about what we did. It’s about being brave and thinking outside the box.
  • You Said
Some families that I have supported, they have been pushed away when their child reaches 18 and their views and knowledge is ignored to the extent it’s damaging to everyone.
  • Response
There is a lot to be said and there needs to be more open and honest discussions, Trust and Communicate!

In tenancies there will be something about damage and when someone doesn’t have capacity around a meltdown that causes damage there needs to be an agreement on actions of people that need that support and financial responsibility is an issue.
  • Response
There is a difference in tenancies and there are certain clauses that aren’t quite right and need tweaking. There needs to be some compromise there. (Possibly a co-production thing that can come out of this)

  • Response
There are some funding ways to support such as discharge grants to help people move from a long stay hospital setting into the community. It shouldn’t be a barrier for someone living in their home, how they express themselves either through stress or excitement.

Item 2. Accommodation Strategy

  • You Said
It’s important for support workers to get to wherever you are living.
  • Response
More rural supported housing schemes are becoming more challenging for getting people to live there and getting the staffing. There seem to be more younger people coming to supported housing, with younger people wanting to be in more urban areas. At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a demand in out of town areas.
  • You Said
How much work are you doing on this to get other people’s opinions on what they want?
  • Response
We are speaking with the Suffolk User Forum, which are the mental health services group, and colleagues are making inroads with other groups of people. I really do want to speak to people that will be touched by the strategy.
  • You Said
For the people that are coming through on the education health care plan there should be information somewhere of what these people need through that system and it would be really good to speak to the young people that are currently coming through the colleges.
  • Response
We are partnering with Children and Young Persons services. Often, people are hitting their 18th birthday, and the gap needs to be bridged to know their needs.
  • You Said
There's lots of work to be done for the young people leaving education. It's about compatibility, something the strategy needs to look at (some young people want to live in urban areas where it's busy, whereas others have a more rural location).
  • Response
  • You Said
Locations (a big challenge in Suffolk as a whole) are a huge problem when recruiting people where some support workers can’t drive, and public transport makes things difficult with rural services not so regular. And when people are on minimum wage, they are paying their first hour or two of work they are spending that on public transport.
  • Response
There has been a shift in challenges around support workers getting to rural areas and services being staff able.

Item 4. Suffolk Ordinary Lives website updates

  • You Said
Is there a section website that lists all the different types of accommodation and providers in Suffolk?
  • Response
No answer. Kate asked for a special request that this could be done?
