The Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust learning disabilities and autism liaison nurses have been working with Framfield Surgery in Woodbridge who were concerned about the low attendance (below 30%) for cervical and breast screening of patients with a learning disability with the aim of increasing attendance.  All five forms of screening were included Cervical, Breast, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Bowel and Diabetic eye screening and the project would be rolled out across Ipswich and east and west Suffolk.

The over-arching aim of the project was to support the understanding of the importance of screening, how it works and who and how to contact to book screening, this information is aimed at people with a learning disability and autism, their families and carers and is underpinned by the message that screening is everyone’s business.

A resource has been co-produced that resembles a dashboard and contains eligibility criteria and contact details.  Easy read leaflets and Frequently Asked Questions have also been co-produced and are available to download.

The Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust learning disabilities and autism liaison nurses have worked in co-production with Ace Anglia, peer educators and cervical screening team to review existing resources and update them when necessary and to produce new resources where we found gaps, this included bite sized videos and frequently asked questions which has been used as myth-busters, especially in relation to cervical screening and sexual activity, information has also been produced for people who identify as transgender.

This resource is now available on this webpage and SNEE ICB health and care professionals website and will be shared with health and care colleagues, care providers, family carer networks, voluntary organisations, day services, educational establishments and through social media.
