Plain English: UK Government pauses the Rights Removal Bill
Monday the 12th of September 2022
On the 22nd of June 2022, the UK Government shared a new Bill of Rights with Parliament and the public which will replace our Human Rights Act.
Parliament must decide if this Bill should become law.
They have been thinking about this for the past few months.
Lots of people are saying that the new Bill of Rights should be called the Rights Removal Bill instead.
This is because we think it will take away, or remove, our rights.

On the 9th of September 2022, the UK Government decided to stop Parliament from making any decisions about the Rights Removal Bill for now.
We are not sure what this means yet.
A few different things could happen:
- The Government might decide to keep the Bill the same and look at it again later.
- The Government might decide to change the Rights Removal Bill.
- The Government might decide to get rid of the Rights Removal Bill and keep our Human Rights Act.
This might have happened because Liz Truss became the new Prime Minister on the 6th of September 2022.
This meant there were lots of changes in the Government.
Another reason this might have happened is because lots of people do not like the Rights Removal Bill.
Our Human Rights Act is not safe yet because we do not know what the Government will decide to do next.
But this is good news because it gives us more time to speak up about why our Human Rights Act matters.
