Today we had a great My Health Focus group held at Kesgrave Community Centre in Ipswich.

Many essential topics were discussed, such as healthy eating, exercise, constipation awareness month, bowel screening and good hospital experiences. The group also discussed what they would like to see on the agenda for this year!

Let’s Talk about Constipation: Peer Educator Steven, interviews Sheila Handley

In this video, peer educator Steven talks with family carer Sheila Handley, who shares her story. Sheila’s son, Richard, had Down’s Syndrome and sadly passed away in 2012 due to constipation. Sheila highlights the importance of being aware of constipation and provides guidance on prevention and identifying crucial signs and symptoms. This video aims to support individuals with learning disabilities, their family carers, and support workers in understanding health better. “It’s only by raising awareness of what it is, how you get it and how you stop it will stop sad stories like Richard’s from happening.”

Hilda speaks about her positive hospital experience

In this video, Hilda shares her recent experience at Ipswich Hospital, including her ambulance ride. She discusses the support she received from the paramedics and doctors. Speaking to Hilda directly and informing her about what was happening helped her to remain calm and relaxed during her time at Ipswich Hospital.
